Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter | A Detailed Rundown and Review

Review November 10, 2016

Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter

The Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter with 1080P 60FPS HD Video is excellent for aerial videography and photography. This mid-priced quadcopter is a direct rival to the cheaper priced DJI Phantom Vision 2. The manufacturers, Yuneec, are known industry leaders in aerial aviation with over 15 years experience in electric aviation. They have an established reputation for creativity, innovation and accessibility. With that being said, let’s go through the specifics of this Yuneec product to establish how much value for money this drone provides.

Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter Details

This Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter uses a CGO2 GB, combining a 3-axis brushless gimbal, with a 12-megapixel and 1080p 680fps HD video camera into a single unit—capable of capturing aerial images and continual aerial video in vivid detail. This is not to undermine its flying experience. Though still more beginner-friendly than the DJI Phantom Vision 2, the Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter offers an advanced flying experience. Thanks to its equally larger size, it is a lot easier to see from afar. Whilst we have to admit that the DJI Phantom Vision 2 is clearly more feature packed, the flight experience the Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter provides is unrivaled.

Specifications

The Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter with 1080P 680FPS HD Video camera is fitted with a full HD Video camera capable of recording videos with extraordinary image quality in an immersive 130 degree field of view. The ST10 personal ground station provides the user with a perfect real-time feed of what the camera sees. It’s 5200-mAh battery guarantees of 25 minutes flight time. The product comes with two batteries.

In comparison, the lower-priced DJI Phantom Vision 2 is more feature-packed with a more powerful 14MP camera, an additional 32GB memory card (which sadly, has to be purchased separately for the Q500) and all the added features of the original Phantom such as advanced GPS-guided autonomous functionality. However, this Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter is excellent for beginner and intermediate flyers, thanks to its inbuilt geo-fencing, providing a maximum altitude of 400 feet in smart mode. More advanced flyers can always adjust this. It is also capable of withstanding winds of up to 15mph without any issues.

Pros and Cons

The major downside to this drone is its price. Whilst users appreciate the silky smooth flight, the price tag is a turn-off for those unfamiliar with this product.

Purchasers of both the DJI Phantom Vision 2 and the Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter with 1080p 680fps HD video camera clearly prefer the Q500’s flight prowess. Another consensus shared by buyers is its quiet flight. Its speed is slower than the Phantom and that makes it perfect for video and image capturing, as well as avoiding objects like trees. It is also noted for its soft landing, slowing down before touching the ground and bouncing a few times before eventually coming to a halt.
