DJI Phantom 3 Standard | A Thorough Review

Review November 8, 2016

DJI Phantom 3 Standard is sturdy and well built and the perfect drone for the beginner who wants to get a taste of premium drone flying for a fraction of the cost. But hey, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard is a lot of fun to fly too! Thus, this review will show whether the DJI Phantom 3 Standard can continue the tradition set by previous releases like the Phantom 3 Advanced. DJI has been successful in the buying and selling of used and new drones. They also deal in UAVs, vehicles and RC toys. Recently, its foray into the manufacture of copters has positioned it as an innovative and consistent supplier. Yet, its previous copters like the Advanced were a bit too pricey. With the DJI Phantom 3 Standard however, you’ll get features found in the predecessors but at a great price point.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard Details

Specifications

You can easily find other products with the Standard’s features. What’s not so easy to find though is a ready-to-fly copter with the polish at the price of the Standard. Its built-in camera will capture great videos for you at 2.7K resolution. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard camera works on an integrated three-axis gimbal, thus making for stable shots. What’s even more likable about this drone is that it uses the same Intelligent Flight Modes you’d find in higher-end models. On price and packaging alone, the Standard beats competing products like the DJI Phantom 4, Yuneec Typhoon Q500 and the Blade Chroma.

The truth is that the Standard is an entry-level drone. You would not expect to find the Visual Positioning System that comes built in the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, for example. And because of that, it’s a challenge to fly the Standard indoors. For positioning, The DJI Phantom 3 Standard uses GPS. That’s unlike the DJI Advanced and the Professional, which both use GLONASS in addition to GPS. A first time drone flier would nonetheless be content with the simple flying offered by the Standard. The great pricing of the Standard would more than make up for the lack of sophistication of higher-end models.

Pros and Cons

Customers however complain that about the Standard’s limited transmission range. Unlike the 3 mile range of DJI Advanced, for example, the Standard only manages a measly 0.6-mile range. The difference comes about due to the Standard’s use of a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi extender in place of the Lightbridge extender that customers have come to expect. Still, the Standard manages to overcome these concerns by using a camera similar to the advanced models — the wide-angle f2.8 lens, distortion free camera.

That balance — between features and pricing — has earned the Standard positive customer reviews. On Amazon, it has an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. It’s been praised for its premium offerings with some considering it a worthy upgrade from the cheap $80 drones. And although there are those that complain about lost frames in video, the consensus remains that the Standard is a fun and great platform for beginners.

Conclusion and Rating

Based on design, features and ease of use, I’d personally give the Standard 4 out of 5 stars. The drone is certainly great to handle — a major consideration for beginners. You’re unlikely to find impressive offers at the $200 to $800 price range. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is certainly a good buy considering that you’ll also get a controller — a bargain for a price point where you’d normally have to buy a separate controller.
